The Best Solicitors in Cardiff

Updated 16 firms evaluated10 listed Regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority

Cardiff has the unusual position of being both a capital city and a regional legal market, so the Legal 500's Wales tables read as a Cardiff list with a few Swansea and Newport firms attached, and three of the top-tier family firms are Cardiff specialists that do nothing else. These ten were ranked on the five checks we run on every firm. Rank one is the best overall, ranks two to four are the best for family law, conveyancing and commercial work, and the rest cleared the same checks. How we rank

  1. 01 Best overall
  2. 02 Best for family law

Before you instruct a firm in Cardiff

Check the register first. Every firm here appears on the Solicitors Regulation Authority register, and the number is on the card where the firm publishes it. Check it again yourself before you sign anything, because firms merge, rename and occasionally lose their authorisation between our quarterly re-checks.

Use the specialists for family work. Three of the four firms in the Legal 500’s top tier for family law in Wales are Cardiff boutiques that do nothing else, and all three are on this list. For a divorce with money or children in dispute, that concentration is worth more than a general firm’s family department.

Get the estimate in writing. Cardiff is better than most cities for published prices, with seven of these ten printing something. Everything else is hourly, and an estimate given on the phone is not the same as one written into a client care letter.

The corporate firms have moved to the new offices around Central Square by the station and out to Cardiff Bay, which is where Hugh James, Blake Morgan, Acuity and Geldards all sit. The family and consumer firms stayed closer to the old civic centre on Park Place, Greyfriars Road and Cathedral Road, within walking distance of the Civil and Family Justice Centre.

Frequently asked
How do I check a Cardiff solicitor is regulated?

Look the firm up on the Solicitors Regulation Authority register. Wales shares the England and Wales legal system, so Cardiff firms are SRA regulated in the same way as English firms. Every firm on this list was checked there before it was listed.

Why is a family law firm ranked above Acuity Law?

Because ranks two to four are not a straight ranking. Rank one is the best firm overall. Ranks two, three and four are the best firm for family law, conveyancing and commercial work respectively. Grant Stephens at rank two is the best place in Cardiff to take a divorce, not a claim that it beats Acuity at company work.

Can I get legal advice in Welsh in Cardiff?

Yes. Hugh James, Geldards and Grant Stephens all run Welsh language pages and say they can act in Welsh, and you have the right to use Welsh in Welsh courts. Ask when you first call, because the firm needs a Welsh-speaking solicitor free for your matter, not just a translated web page.

How much do solicitors in Cardiff charge?

It depends on the work and on who does it. Capital Law publishes actual prices, Robertsons publishes conveyancing fees, and Hugh James, Blake Morgan, Geldards, Lux and Darwin Gray all publish price or fee pages. Court and corporate work is mostly hourly, quoted after a first meeting. Ask for the estimate in writing before you instruct.

What is the difference between a solicitor and a barrister?

A solicitor is the lawyer you hire. They advise, draft, negotiate and run your case. A barrister is a courtroom specialist, usually instructed by your solicitor when a case goes to trial at the Cardiff Civil and Family Justice Centre or the Crown Court.
