The Best Solicitors in Newcastle

Updated 15 firms evaluated10 listed Regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority

Newcastle's law firms run from the Quayside and Gallowgate out to Jesmond and Byker, and the Legal 500 treats the city as the centre of its North region, so the directory tables read as a Newcastle table with a few Teesside and Cumbria firms attached. These ten were ranked on the five checks we run on every firm. Rank one is the best overall, ranks two to four are the best for family law, conveyancing and commercial work, and the rest cleared the same checks. How we rank

  2. 02 Best for family law
  3. 03 Best for conveyancing

Before you instruct a firm in Newcastle

Check the register first. Every firm here appears on the Solicitors Regulation Authority register, and the number is on the card where the firm publishes it. Check it again yourself before you sign anything, because firms merge, rename and occasionally lose their authorisation between our quarterly re-checks.

Read the Legal 500 region correctly. The directory’s North region covers Newcastle, Teesside and Cumbria in one family table, so a top tier ranking there is a regional result. We checked each firm for a Newcastle office before listing it, and three of the firms here are ranked in the Newcastle-specific corporate table.

Get the estimate in writing. Fixed fees exist for uncontested divorce, conveyancing and simple wills, and one firm here prints its divorce price. Everything else is hourly, and an estimate given on the phone is not the same as one written into a client care letter.

The commercial firms sit between the Quayside and Gallowgate, with a newer cluster at Newcastle Helix where Hay & Kilner has its registered office. The consumer firms have moved out to where clients live: Mincoffs in Jesmond, Ben Hoare Bell in Byker, Major Family Law in Ponteland, and David Gray holding the old County Court building on Westgate Road.

Frequently asked
How do I check a Newcastle solicitor is regulated?

Look the firm up on the Solicitors Regulation Authority register. Every firm on this list was checked there before it was listed, and where a firm publishes its SRA number we show it on the card. Four firms on this list do not print the number on their sites, and the cards say so.

Why is a family law firm ranked above Muckle?

Because ranks two to four are not a straight ranking. Rank one is the best firm overall. Ranks two, three and four are the best firm for family law, conveyancing and commercial work respectively. David Gray at rank two is the best place in Newcastle to take a divorce, not a claim that it beats Muckle at company work.

Do I need a solicitor based in Newcastle?

For conveyancing and most paperwork-led work, no. For family, criminal and dispute work, a firm that knows the Newcastle Combined Court Centre and the family court on the Quayside, and can sit down with you, is worth more than a cheaper firm at the other end of the country.

How much do solicitors in Newcastle charge?

It depends on the work and on who does it. Major Family Law publishes a fixed price divorce, and Ward Hadaway, Sintons and David Gray publish pricing or fees pages. Commercial and dispute work is mostly hourly, quoted after a first meeting. Ask for the estimate in writing before you instruct.

Can I still get legal aid in Newcastle?

For some family, housing, mental health and criminal matters, yes, subject to a means test. David Gray is the firm on this list that most clearly advertises legal aid work. BTO-style commercial firms and most of the larger practices do not take it, so ask before the first meeting.
