The Best Solicitors in Leeds

Updated 16 firms evaluated10 listed Regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority

Leeds has a legal market to match its size. National commercial firms keep their head offices on Wellington Street, independents run to two hundred people, and specialist family boutiques sit within a few streets of Park Square. These ten were ranked on the five checks we run on every firm. Rank one is the best overall, ranks two to four are the best for family law, conveyancing and commercial work, and the rest cleared the same checks. How we rank

Before you instruct a firm in Leeds

Check the register first. Every firm here appears on the Solicitors Regulation Authority register, and the number is on the card where the firm publishes it. Check it again yourself before you sign anything, because firms merge, rename and occasionally lose their authorisation between our quarterly re-checks.

Ask which office runs your file. Three of the firms on this list are headquartered elsewhere in Yorkshire or run several branches. The Leeds address on the website is not always where the person handling your matter sits.

Get the estimate in writing. Fixed fees exist for conveyancing, wills and settlement agreements, and two firms here print theirs. Everything else is hourly, and an estimate given on the phone is not the same as one written into a client care letter.

The big commercial firms cluster on Wellington Street, where Walker Morris keeps its head office, and the family specialists cluster around Park Square. The independents in between, Blacks, Ison Harrison and Levi among them, are the firms most people in Leeds actually use, because they do the house move, the will and the business sale under one roof.

Frequently asked
How do I check a Leeds solicitor is regulated?

Look the firm up on the Solicitors Regulation Authority register. Every firm on this list was checked there before it was listed, and where a firm publishes its SRA number we show it on the card. Two firms on the list do not show the number on the pages we read, and the cards say so.

Why is a family law firm ranked above Walker Morris?

Because ranks two to four are not a straight ranking. Rank one is the best firm overall. Ranks two, three and four are the best firm for family law, conveyancing and commercial work respectively. Jones Myers at rank two is the best place in Leeds to take a divorce, not a claim that it beats Walker Morris at company work.

Do I need a solicitor based in Leeds?

For conveyancing and most paperwork-led work, no. For family, criminal and dispute work, a firm that knows the Leeds courts and can sit down with you is worth more than a cheaper firm at the other end of the country. Several firms here have branches in the suburbs as well as the city centre.

How much do solicitors in Leeds charge?

It depends on the work and on who does it. The firms on this list that publish prices are marked with one to three pound signs, and Levi Solicitors and Lake Legal print exact figures for wills and mediation. Commercial and dispute work is mostly hourly, quoted after a first meeting. Ask for the estimate in writing before you instruct.

What is the difference between a solicitor and a barrister?

A solicitor is the lawyer you hire. They advise, draft, negotiate and run your case. A barrister is a courtroom specialist, usually instructed by your solicitor when a case goes to trial at Leeds Combined Court Centre or the county court.
