Before you instruct a firm in Coventry

Check the register first. Every firm here appears on the Solicitors Regulation Authority register, and the number is on the card where the firm publishes it. Check it again yourself before you sign anything, because firms merge, rename and occasionally lose their authorisation between our quarterly re-checks.

Expect independents, not national names. Coventry has no firm in the Legal 500’s Birmingham tables, and the national practices serve it from Birmingham. That is not a weakness for everyday work: the local firms hold Lexcel and the Conveyancing Quality Scheme, and they publish more prices than the big firms do.

Get the estimate in writing. Two firms here publish real figures and two more publish charges pages. An estimate given on the phone is not the same as one written into a client care letter, so ask for it before you instruct.

Almost every firm on this list sits within a few hundred yards of the ring road, on The Quadrant, Butts Road and Friars Road, which puts them close to the Combined Court Centre on Much Park Street. Most also keep offices out in Warwickshire, in Warwick, Leamington, Nuneaton, Rugby, Southam and Balsall Common, so a Coventry firm here is usually a county firm too.

Frequently asked
Why only six firms?

Because six cleared our checks. Coventry is a city of independent firms, and several of the names we looked at had no directory ranking, no published accreditation and no verifiable regulator record on their own sites. We would rather run a short list than pad it with firms we cannot evidence.

How do I check a Coventry solicitor is regulated?

Look the firm up on the Solicitors Regulation Authority register. Every firm on this list was checked there before it was listed, and where a firm publishes its SRA number we show it on the card.

Why is a family law firm ranked above the commercial pick?

Because ranks two to four are not a straight ranking. Rank one is the best firm overall. Ranks two, three and four are the best firm for family law, conveyancing and commercial work respectively. Alsters Kelley at rank two is the best place in Coventry to take a divorce, not a claim that it beats the others at company work.

How much do solicitors in Coventry charge?

Coventry is better than most cities for published prices. Askews Legal itemises its conveyancing fees and search costs, Talbots prices a first family appointment at £150, and Band Hatton Button and Alsters Kelley both publish charges pages. Ask for the estimate in writing before you instruct.

Should I use a Birmingham firm instead?

Only if the work needs it. Birmingham has the bigger commercial firms, and for a large transaction or a complex dispute that depth is worth the drive. For a house move, a will or a divorce, a Coventry firm that knows the Combined Court Centre on Much Park Street will be quicker and cheaper.
