The Best Solicitors in Glasgow

Updated 16 firms evaluated10 listed Regulated by the Law Society of Scotland

Glasgow's solicitors are regulated by the Law Society of Scotland rather than the SRA, buy and sell houses through a system of offers and missives that England does not use, and run divorces under Scottish rules on separation and matrimonial property. We ranked these ten on the five checks we run on every firm, with the register and the fee checks adjusted for Scotland. Rank one is the best overall, ranks two to four are the best for family law, conveyancing and commercial work, and the rest cleared the same checks. How we rank

  1. 01 Best overall
  2. 02 Best for family law

Before you instruct a firm in Glasgow

Check the right register. Every firm here is regulated by the Law Society of Scotland, which is why no card carries an SRA number. Check the firm on the Society’s register yourself before you sign anything, because firms merge, rename and occasionally lose their authorisation between our quarterly re-checks.

Ask about the Scottish system. Conveyancing, divorce and executry all run under Scots law, and a firm that also practises in England will usually ring-fence its Scottish work in a separate entity. Burness Paull holds an SRA authorisation for its English work alongside its Scottish regulation, and the card says so.

Get the estimate in writing. Fixed fees are common in Glasgow for divorce, conveyancing, wills and powers of attorney, and several firms here publish theirs. Everything else is hourly, and an estimate given on the phone is not the same as one written into your terms of business.

The big firms sit within a few streets of each other on Queen Street, St Vincent Street, West George Street and York Street, which is where all ten firms on this list have their offices. The specialist firms have grown up alongside them: MTM in family law, Scullion in family and crime, and Gilson Gray running estate agency and conveyancing together in the Scottish way.

Frequently asked
How do I check a Glasgow solicitor is regulated?

Scottish solicitors are regulated by the Law Society of Scotland, not the Solicitors Regulation Authority, so the SRA register will not show them. Use the Law Society of Scotland's find a solicitor search. Every firm on this list was checked there before it was listed.

Why is a family law firm ranked above Burness Paull?

Because ranks two to four are not a straight ranking. Rank one is the best firm overall. Ranks two, three and four are the best firm for family law, conveyancing and commercial work respectively. BTO at rank two is the best place in Glasgow to take a divorce, not a claim that it beats Burness Paull at company work.

Is buying a house different in Scotland?

Yes. Sellers must provide a Home Report before marketing, offers are made through your solicitor, and the deal becomes binding when the solicitors conclude missives, which is usually weeks before the moving date. Many Glasgow firms are also estate agents, so one firm can sell your old house and buy the new one.

How much do solicitors in Glasgow charge?

It depends on the work and on who does it. BTO and Lindsays publish fixed fee options for family work, Gilson Gray and Scullion LAW publish fees pages, and Burness Paull publishes pricing information. Commercial and dispute work is mostly hourly, quoted after a first meeting. Ask for the estimate in writing before you instruct.

How does divorce work in Scotland?

A Scottish court grants divorce where the marriage has broken down irretrievably, shown by one year's separation with consent, two years without, adultery or unreasonable behaviour. Financial provision is decided under Scottish rules on matrimonial property, which differ from England, so use a solicitor who practises here.
